NIH: Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) (P20)PAR-16-415The National Institute of General Medical Sciences has released its new Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) (P20) funding announcement. Please see: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-16-415.html
The COBRE competition is limited to one submission per institution. Because it takes time to assemble a strong team for a competitive COBRE proposal, the Office for the Vice President for Research is opening an internal competition for submissions to the 2018 COBRE deadline date (which is January 24, 2018).
Those interested in submitting should send up to 5 page summary of the overall center (excluding references); 3 page descriptions of Specific Aims and Approach (excluding references) of each proposed project from junior faculty and Cores; and NIH CVs of the PI, Core Directors, Mentors, and target faculty.

All applications will be reviewed using the following criteria:
1) Significance: Does the program address an important area of research that will advance the field? If the aims of the program are accomplished, will scientific knowledge, technical capability, and/or clinical practice be improved?
2) Investigator(s): Are the PIs and junior faculty listed well qualified to lead the project? If multiple PI, do the investigators have complementary expertise? Do they have the experience to manage an effective mentoring plan to move junior faculty toward independent status? Are the mentors well qualified?
3) Innovation: Is the Center innovative? Are the concepts, approaches and methodologies, novel to advance the field?
4) Approach: Are the projects well integrated and focused on a central theme? Do the Cores proposed meet the needs of junior faculty projects? Will the Cores be used by all junior projects?
5) Environment: Is there enough opportunity at USC to advance this field leading to additional faculty recruitment?
6) Summary: Is this application as proposed nationally competitive to help establish a COBRE Center? What are the strengths and weaknesses?
