DOE/BES: Energy Frontier Research Centers DE-FOA-0001810
The DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) has announced a Funding Opportunity Announcement for Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs). The competition will be open both to proposals from existing EFRCs seeking renewal of support and to proposals from institutions seeking to establish new EFRCs under the program. Universities, national laboratories, nonprofit organizations, and private firms are eligible to compete and are encouraged to form multi-disciplinary research teams that may include partnerships with other institutions.
Selection will be based on a rigorous peer review process. Research supported by this initiative will provide fundamental understanding to enable future advances in energy production and use. When making selections, DOE will emphasize emerging science priorities that have been highlighted in recent workshops, including quantum materials, catalysis science, synthesis science, instrumentation science, next-generation energy storage, future nuclear energy, and energy-water issues.
Awards are expected to range from $2 million per year to $4 million per year per center for each of four fiscal years. Total funding for the new investment, pending Congressional appropriations, is expected to be up to $99 million per year for the four-year awards.
This competition limits applications from lead organizations to three. If you are interested in submitting to this competition, please submit the following to the Office of Research and Grant Development by Friday, December 15:
• A Cover Page that lists the title; lead principal investigator (with contact information); the Basic Research Need Report addressed (please see FOA); the Grand Challenge addressed (please see FOA); and the Transformative Opportunity addressed (please see FOA).
• A two-page summary which includes a clear and concise statement of the scientific mission of the proposed EFRC and a set of four-year research goals designed to support that mission.
Please email the above as a single PDF file to Beth Herron (bherron@mailbox.sc.edu) by 5 pmFriday, December 15, 2017. The 3 applicants selected to move forward will be notified by early January.
Mandatory pre-applications are due to DOE by January 31, 2018. Pre-applications will be evaluated, and applicants with the highest-rated pre-applications will be invited to submit full applications.
Full applications are due by April 11, 2018 and award selection is expected by July 2018.
