St. Baldrick’s Foundation : St. Baldrick’s Scholar (career development) AwardThe Office for the Vice President for Research and Office for Corporate and Foundation Relations are pleased to coordinate an internal competition for proposals to several competitions sponsored by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation . The St. Baldrick’s Foundation (SBF) is a volunteer-powered charity committed to funding the most promising childhood cancer research.
The St. Baldrick’s Scholar (career development) Award is meant to help develop the independent research of highly qualified individuals still early in their careers; it is intended to develop the independent pediatric cancer research careers of highly qualified junior investigators.
This award is up to $110,000/year for 3 years. Applicants must be within 7 years of their initial independent full faculty appointment at the time the award begins. Applicants cannot hold an NIH K award at the time that they apply. They also must have an appropriate Sponsor who provides supervision, facilities, and research support. Research projects must have direct applicability and relevance to pediatric cancer – in any discipline of basic, clinical, translational, or epidemiologic research. The University of South Carolina may only submit one proposal to this competition.
St. Baldrick’s Research Grants are for specific one-year research projects which are hypothesis-driven and may be either laboratory, clinical, or epidemiological in nature. The average grant will be $100,000 or less, although the Foundation expects realistic budgets. The University of South Carolina may only submit two proposals to this competition.
St. Baldrick’s Supportive Care Research Grants are for specific one-year projects which are hypothesis-driven and focus on areas related to the supportive care of children and adolescents with cancer. Applications are accepted from Ph.D. and D.N.P. holders. Examples include but are not limited to symptom clusters, patient-reported outcomes or quality of life, health communications, health promotion, and psychosocial support across the trajectory from diagnosis to survivorship or end-of-life care. The average Supportive Care Grant will have a budget of $50,000 or less. The University of South Carolina may only submit one proposal to this competition.
Interested applicants should submit a one page Letter of Intent (Times New Roman, 11 point font with .5 inch margins) which contains the following information:
• Name and contact information
• Title of the proposed project
• Area of focus of the proposed project (childhood cancer type, for example)
• Relevance of the proposed research project to the mission of St. Baldrick’s, to cure childhood cancers
• Brief rationale and timeline for the proposed project
Also include an NIH formatted biosketch. Send the LOI and biosketch as a single PDF by 5 pm on Thursday, January 4, 2018 Beth Herron at bherron@mailbox.sc.edu.
