PhRMA Foundation:Pre-doctoral AwardsThe goal of the Informatics program is to promote development and use of novel informatics in an integrative approach toward understanding normal processes of human biology and disease processes. Informatics awards support career development of scientists engaged in research that significantly integrates state-of-the-art information technology developed with advanced biological, chemical, and pharmacological sciences in the following areas: genetics proteomics; molecular systems biology; medical (human) pathways and networks; pharmaco-integrative biology; population modeling and simulation; novel approaches to the analysis of big data; and genomics molecular epidemiology. Proposals must contain innovative informatics components; emphasis will be placed on the development of new informatics technologies that facilitate translation of data into an understanding of human biological and disease processes, including an identification of an unmet clinical need.
Pharmacology/toxicology awards support career development activities of scientists embarking on research that integrates information on molecular or cellular mechanisms of action with information on the effects of an agent observed in an intact organism, in experimental animal or clinical studies or both. Highest priority will be given to applicants whose research will attempt to integrate information on a drug or chemical’s mechanism of action at the molecular or cellular level with a drug’s effect in a human or laboratory animal. Applicants should describe the significance of a hypothesis being tested in the context of potential influences of biochemical, physiological, behavioral, or social systems.
Applicants for the Informatics awards must have completed most of their pre-thesis requirements (at least two years of study) and be engaged in their research as PhD candidates by the time the award begins. Applicants for the Pharmacology/Toxicology awards must be full-time, in-residence pharmacology or toxicology students in a school of medicine, pharmacy, public health, or dentistry. Eligible candidates will have completed most of their pre-thesis requirements (at least 2 years of study) and be engaged in thesis research as PhD candidates by the time the awards begin. All applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.
The internal deadline for interested applicants is August 15, 2018. Please submit the following:
• A cover page indicating which competition you are interested in and a 200 word abstract concerning your proposed research plan
• A two page letter (single spaced, 12 point font) describing who you are, your professional interests, and your career plans
• A one page synopsis of your proposed research project (single spaced, can be 11 point font)
• A letter of reference from your advisor, mentor, or department chair
Please submit the required documents (preferably as a single PDF document) to Beth Herron at bherron@mailbox.sc.edu by 5 pm on August 15, 2018. Decisions about the selected applicants will be made quickly as the PhRMA deadline is September 1.
