St. Baldricks Foundation : St. Baldricks Scholar (career development) Award

The Office for the Vice President for Research and Office for Corporate and Foundation Relations are pleased to coordinate an internal competition for proposals to several competitions sponsored by the St. Baldricks Foundation . The St. Baldricks Foundation (SBF) is a volunteer-powered charity committed to funding the most promising childhood cancer research.

The St. Baldricks Scholar (career development) Award is meant to help develop the independent research of highly qualified individuals still early in their careers; it is intended to develop the independent pediatric cancer research careers of highly qualified junior investigators.

This award is up to $110,000/year for 3 years. Applicants must be within 7 years of their initial independent full faculty appointment at the time the award begins. Applicants cannot hold an NIH R01 or K award at the time that they apply. They also must have an appropriate Sponsor who provides supervision, facilities, and research support. Research projects must have direct applicability and relevance to pediatric cancer- in any discipline of basic, clinical, translational, or epidemiologic research.

The University of South Carolina may only submit one proposal to this competition.

In addition to the limit of one proposal described above, we can submit an additional proposal focused on one of the following topics:

-Brain tumors, all types, including rare forms
-Burkitt lymphoma
-Complementary and alternative therapies
-Hepatoblastoma
-Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis
-Rhabdoid tumors

Interested applicants should submit a one-page cover sheet and a one-page Letter of Intent (Times New Roman, 11 point font with .5 inch margins) which contains the following information:

-Name and contact information
-Title of the proposed project
-Competition area (scholars, research grants, or supportive care research); for scholars, please note number of years since full faculty appointment
-Area of focus of the proposed project (childhood cancer type, for example); please note if it is one of the additional noted areas
-Relevance of the proposed research project to the mission of St. Baldricks, to cure childhood cancers
-Brief rationale and timeline for the proposed project

Also include an NIH formatted biosketch. Send the LOI and biosketch as a single PDF by 5 pm on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 Beth Herron at bherron@mailbox.sc.edu.

The St. Baldricks LOI deadline is December 4, 2020, with invited full proposals due by February 19, 2021.
