The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) summer stipend program provides grants of $6,000 for two consecutive months of summer support for research and writing in the humanities. Each campus at USC (Columbia campus, Comprehensive/Senior campuses, and Palmetto campuses) may nominate only two applicants each for consideration.
NEH particularly seeks proposals related to its initiative, A More Perfect Union, that bring the perspective of the humanities to questions of racial justice, gender equality, the evolution of the American landscape, as well as America’s place in the world. The agency strongly encourages projects that strengthen Americans’ knowledge of our principles of constitutional governance and democracy, as well as projects that address the experiences of Native Americans and other under-represented communities. In addition, NEH welcomes projects that develop innovative approaches to sustaining the nation’s humanities infrastructure and preserving its historical record.
NEH particularly encourages junior faculty to apply, sharing that the Summer Stipend program is a “good way for junior faculty to lay the foundation for future grant applications [and is] an excellent entry point for the NEH and its many awards programs. About forty percent of recent Stipends awardees are first-time applicants.”
Submission Process
As a limited submission, applications must be coordinated internally and will require an institutional endorsement. Each campus may nominate two applicants.
• For our Comprehensive/Senior and Palmetto College campus tenured and tenure-track faculty, please reach out to your administration for your campus-specific internal competition process.

Columbia campus internal competition process:
1. By 5 pm Tuesday, September 5, complete the first 4 attachments (Narrative, Work plan, Bibliography, and Resume) of the required application materials following the format and guidelines described on the NEH web site referenced above. The application has multiple attachments, all of which are summarized on the NEH web site. The remaining attachments are not required at this time. In addition, letters of recommendation are not required at this time. You will have to arrange for them for full proposal submission if your application is selected. This is also the time to check your Grants.gov registration (see guidelines).
2. Also by 5 pm Tuesday, September 5, applicants will submit the 4 prepared attachments associated with their application via e-mail to the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Jeff Twiss at twiss@mailbox.sc.edu. Please note, applications are accepted from faculty throughout the Columbia campus regardless of College or School of origin.
3. By 5pm Wednesday, September 13, all Columbia campus nominees will be notified of their selection status.
4. By 5 pm Monday, September 18, the two selected nominees will have completed the internal approval process, securing the usual USCERA approvals for their application. They should then proceed to upload their materials to the Grants.gov web site, following the NEH submission instructions (see note below), by no later than the September 20 deadline and, ideally, by September 19.
NOTE: This is an award to the individual, not the institution, so candidates are responsible for their own submissions.
