USC can nominate one assistant professor in the area of biomedical sciences who meets the criteria outlined below to compete for funding in the 2024 Pew Biomedical Scholars Program. This award provides $300,000 in flexible support for the selected recipient to use over four years ($75,000 per year) to conduct biomedical research.
Candidates should demonstrate outstanding promise as contributors in science relevant to human health. Strong proposals will incorporate particularly creative and pioneering approaches to basic, translational, and applied biomedical research. Candidates whose work is based on biomedical principles but who bring in concepts and theories from more diverse fields are encouraged to apply. Ideas with the potential to produce an unusually high impact are encouraged. This program does not fund clinical trials research.
Eligibility:
-Applicants must hold a doctorate in biomedical sciences, medicine, or a related field.
-As of September 5, 2024, they must hold a full-time tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant professor.
-They also must not have been appointed as an assistant professor at any institution prior to June 10, 2020, whether or not such an appointment was on a tenure-track. Time spent in clinical internships, residencies, in work toward board certification, or on parental leave does not count as part of this four-year limit (but the reasons for this must be noted in the internal LOI)
To ensure that USC’s biomedical researchers have the best possible chance at receiving funding through the program, the Offices of the Vice President for Research and Corporate and Foundation Relations will coordinate an internal selection process to choose the final nominee.
Eligible assistant professors must submit a pre-proposal application packet to Beth Herron at bherron@mailbox.sc.edu by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. The University must submit the name of its nominee to this program by May 15, 2024. The selected applicant will work with the Office of the Vice President for Research and Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations to complete and submit the final Pew Biomedical Scholars Program application on or before September 5, 2024.
For questions, please contact Beth Herron in the Research and Grant Development Office at bherron@mailbox.sc.edu or Jennifer McCormack in Corporate and Foundation Relations at mccormjin@mailbox.sc.edu.
