NEH Summer Stipend program

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) offers a summer stipend program to provide grants of $8,000 for two consecutive months of summer support to stimulate new research and publications in the humanities.
All topics are welcome. NEH particularly encourages research related to (see program page and guidelines for details):
• American Tapestry: Weaving Together Past, Present, and Future
• United We Stand: Connecting Through Culture
• The Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative
• Humanities Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence
The Summer Stipend program limits eligibility to individuals who have not previously held an NEH award in any of its programs for individuals (see guidelines). Each USC campus (Columbia campus, Comprehensive/Senior campuses, and Palmetto campuses) may nominate only ONE applicant each for consideration. Nominations are only required for tenured/tenure track faculty. For all others, including staff, non-tenure track and emeritus faculty, please see the guidelines.
NEH will be hosting two webinars introducing the program, describing the application and nomination process, and offering application-writing suggestions: July 10th and August 21st (see website).
Submission Process
Limited submissions MUST be coordinated with the Office of the Vice President for Research.
If interested in applying for this opportunity:
• For our Comprehensive/Senior and Palmetto College campus tenured and tenure-track faculty, please reach out to your campus administration for your campus-specific internal competition process.
• For our Columbia campus tenured and tenure-track faculty, follow the internal competition process outlined below.
• For our staff and non-tenure track and emeritus faculty, please follow the NEH program submission guidelines.
NOTE for ALL: This is an award to the individual, not the institution, so candidates are responsible for their own submissions. Applicants requiring nominations (tenure and tenure-track faculty on all campuses) must identify Julie Morris, Limited Submissions Coordinator, Office of Research, jamorris@mailbox.sc.edu, as USC’s “Nominating Official” for verification of the nomination.
Columbia campus internal competition process:
1. By 5 pm Tuesday, September 3, complete the first 4 attachments (Narrative, Work plan, Bibliography, and Resume) of the required application materials following the format and guidelines described on the NEH web site referenced above. The application has multiple attachments, all of which are summarized on the NEH web site. The other attachments are not required at this time. In addition, letters of recommendation are not required at this time. You will have to arrange for them for full proposal submission if your application is selected. This is also the time to check your Grants.gov registration (see guidelines).
2. Also by 5 pm Tuesday, September 3, applicants will combine the 4 prepared attachments into one PDF document and email the PDF to Jeff Twiss (twiss@mailbox.sc.edu), Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Please note, applications are accepted from faculty throughout the Columbia campus regardless of College or School of origin.
3. By 5pm Tuesday, September 10, all Columbia campus nominees will be notified of their selection status.
4. By 5 pm Monday, September 16, the selected nominee will have completed the internal approval process, securing the usual USCERA approvals for the application. The nominee should then upload the application materials to the Grants.gov web site, following the NEH submission instructions (see note above), by no later than the September 18 deadline and, ideally, by September 17.
