Smart Manufacturing Technologies for Material and Process Innovation

This FOA seeks applications to address the development of smart manufacturing technologies –including through “smart RD&D” – that can contribute to a resilient, responsive, leading-edge, and efficient manufacturing sector that delivers the technologies needed for the nation’s clean energy transition. The manufacturing community can reduce manufacturing costs and accelerate time-to-market by integrating performance characteristics of final products with processes aided by a smart manufacturing framework.
The four topic areas covered are:
- Smart Manufacturing for a Circular Economy
- Smart Manufacturing of Tooling and Equipment for Sustainable Transportation
- Smart Manufacturing for High Performance Materials
- Smart Technologies for Sustainable and Competitive U.S. Mining.
NOTE: Cost share may be required depending on topic area. If required, the cost share must be at least 20% of the total project costs for research and development projects.
USC is limited to 1 concept paper per topic area.

Submission Process
Limited submissions MUST be coordinated with the Office of the Vice President for Research.

- Cover page with grant program name, number, and topic area to which you are applying, your project title, PI (name, department/unit, & email), and list of co-PIs/key collaborators (name & department/unit)
- a two-page project abstract addressing key components/criteria for this specific grant program
- a 2-3 page CV/biosketch for the PI (SCiENcv preferred)
- If cost share is a requirement for your submission, applications must include a letter from your dean that includes the total budget amount that will be requested and how the grant will be costshared
