Writing Open Captions
Open captions give the editor more control over how to format their video's captions.
You can burn open captions into your videos by using video editing software such as
Adobe Premiere Pro or Camtasia.
Suggested Software for Writing Open Captions
Adobe Premiere Pro
Adobe Premiere Pro is available as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud Subscription. Its text to speech
feature auto-generates captions and a transcript that you can customize and stylize.
Burn captions into video is the default export option for captions.
Camtasia
Camtasia has a video editing software subscription that is used by Distributed Learning, Library
Production Services, and SDRC at the university. To export your video with open captions,
select Burned in Captions from the Caption Style dropdown.
Writing Your Captions
The Captioning Key provides a set of general guidelines for how to write quality captions, developed
by Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP).
The guidance in the Captioning Key can help you write readable and understandable
captions, regardless of whether you're writing open captions or closed captions.
