Aletha Jacobs, 1997 USC graduate M.M. Jazz Studies, has taught piano, applied jazz and jazz ensemble at Columbia College ( '78 BA Music Education/Choral/Piano ) since 1998. As a professional musician for 40 years, she has performed in every kind of venue, from playing/singing in bands, accompanying various musicians and musicals, to performing with orchestras. Aletha has also toured the Mediterranean and Central America performing for our troops. Some famous people she has shared a stage with include John Pizzarelli, The Shirelles, The Drifters and Freddy Cole.
Recently, she has written an etude book for intermediate piano with an emphasis on beginning improvisation called "Rockin' Around the Keys." She has been guest artist at CMTA's Jazz and Improv festival for the last several years.
USC's Carolina Alive, The Sandlapper Singers, and North Texas summer camp have all performed one of her jazz choral arrangements with new charts and performances in the works.
Most recent studies include an intensive week of jazz vocal study with the New York Voices at Bowling Green State University.
As a member of JEN and MTNA, she is a dedicated teacher who really enjoys bringing out the artist in every student.
