John joined the Center and relocated to Greenville SC from the University of Iowa. Throughout his career, Dr. Brooks has focused on estimating treatment effectiveness using observational healthcare databases. He has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan and was a Service Fellow at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality prior to coming to the University of Iowa. Dr. Brooks is presently tackling the theoretical and empirical issues surrounding treatment effectiveness research in several clinical areas including cardiovascular medications, breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, end-stage renal disease, and acute nursing care. His research using instrumental variable methods has been published in Health Services Research, Inquiry, Value in Health, Medical Care, Health Economics and Clinical Therapeutics. He is presently the Deputy Director of the Healthcare Effectiveness Research Center (HERCe) at the University of Iowa, which is dedicated to understanding the theoretical and applied issues associated with effectiveness research in healthcare.Dr. Brooks has been appointed to the Department of Health Services Policy and Management within the Arnold School of Public Health.
