The freshman application will have a new major option for students applying for Fall 2025 . The bachelor’s in Applied Sport Psychology and Counseling will prepare students to help athletes and performers achieve balance between mind and body, allowing them to unleash their full potential.
College of Education Dean Thomas Hodges is proud of the innovative nature of the program and believes in its ability to support athletic programs throughout the state and beyond.
“I believe in the power of sports and performance to enrich people's lives,” says Hodges. “As a former athlete, I’m acutely aware of the mental challenges people face in pursuing physical excellence. I’m proud that our college is committed to educating future professionals that will prepare performers to thrive and become champions in their own endeavors.”
The degree covers a unique variety of courses across social sciences, physical education, coaching, sport psychology and counseling. Students will receive in-depth study in human health, mental performance and general well-being of performers.
University of South Carolina Athletics Director Ray Tanner shares his support of the program.
“In intercollegiate athletics, we are always looking for ways to support our student athletes,” says Tanner. “A degree in Applied Sport Psychology and Counseling better equips students who want to get into college athletics with the opportunity to benefit student-athletes.”
The B.S. in Applied Sport Psychology and Counseling will be the only program of its kind in South Carolina and notably, students who choose to earn graduate credit in their final semester will be able to complete both their B.S. and M.S. degrees in four and a half years and ultimately be eligible to sit for the CMPC exam.
Currently enrolled students who are interested in the program, may be eligible to change to this new major for the Spring 2025 semester. Freshman applicants will have the opportunity to choose this major on the Fall 2025 Freshman Application when it opens in August.
