Background

Kathy Smiling heads the college's Office of Student Services and teaches the Marnie Pearce Professionalism Seminar, also known as HRSM 301, in the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management (HRSM). She is also the interim co-director for BAIS and online programs. Smiling comes to the college with 17 years of student services experience.

Previously, Smiling directed student services for the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina. Along with managing daily services, Smiling coordinated student advisement, planned class schedules, recruited and coordinated services for adjunct faculty, coordinated scholarship and awards day activities and rendered senior checks.

Smiling is the 2004 recipient of the Ada B. Thomas Staff Advisor of the Year Award.

Prior to coming to the University, Smiling was a career counselor and disability services coordinator at Midlands Technical College. She began her career at Central Carolina Technical College where she was hired as the transitional studies counselor and later coordinated admissions and student services for the Nursing and Allied Health Division.

Smiling is married to Dwayne Smiling, has a daughter, Kelli, and a dog, Nico.
