Sample goals and learning objectives for the Konduros Public Service Fellowships.
- Please identify and describe three specific goals and learning objectives that you would like to address during your time with your host organization. Example: I would like to interview a client and follow her or his case to conclusion.
Learning Objectives:
- Analyze legal issues through conversations with supervising attorneys or office staff,
drafting documents, letters, policies or procedures and research the legal issues
using the appropriate source:
- Research case and statutory laws using the correct application of the law;
- Create notes and work products that produce quality writings, written effectively and efficiently in a specified time period;
- Conduct legal research and provide advice in areas of or vendor considerations, policy administration, practice or department management areas, employee performance, and dispute resolutions, and;
- Assist supervising attorney on transactional or regulatory projects including drafting, reviewing, revising, and negotiating documents and/or coordinating and managing work products.
- Communicate with a diverse group of people to develop the interpersonal skills needed
to become an effective and engaged problem solver:
- Collaborate with and gather information from individuals who have information about the legal issue(s) assigned, using negotiations skills when required;
- Assist supervising attorney and others within the office on preparing potential and pre-litigation matters;
- Use effective oral communication and listening skills with clients, attorneys, witnesses, and other persons through reporting and presentations, and;
- Partner with supervising attorney to learn how to understand, identify, and address legal issues and risks.
- Become an active and valued member in the office contributing to the work that needs
to be accomplished:
- Take the initiative to ask others in the office if they need help, take advantage of every opportunity to become involved in office assignments, and;
- Manage assigned work without constant step-by-step instructions.
Goals:
- Receive high-quality training and mentoring to gain lawyering skills as a writer, advisor, counselor, and advocate and to demonstrate how an experienced attorney successfully interacts with clients.
- Obtain monitored feedback on work and development from supervising attorney and office staff and have the opportunity to comment on the experiences with supervising attorney and other persons.
- Have the ability to adjust the learning objectives and goals to include valuable skills that are not listed.
