Opportunities for Students
The CHAMPs program offers law and medical students, as well as MSW students and related health professionals the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary educational experiences through its clinic. Additionally, an elective rotation for fourth-year medical students and a field placement for MSW students in the CHAMPs program is offered.
M4 students have the opportunity to participate in a 4-week rotation during which they will work with the law and social work students to identify the social determinants of health, particularly the legal issues affecting health, and will advocate for changes. Among other things, the M4 students will participate in client interviewing in legal cases, review medical records and help interpret them for the law and social work students, and research medical issues.
Second year and advanced standing MSW students have the opportunity to work with lawyers, law students, medical students to provide holistic services to the low-income clients served by CHAMPS. This work includes needs assessments, accessing services for, and case management for CHAMPS clients.
CHAMPS offers summer internships and RA opportunities for students who have completed their 1L or 2L years. During the summer, CHAMPS interns and RAs conduct intakes, meet with clients, do legal research relevant to client cases, and draft memos and briefs. Opportunities to do home visits and attend court with CHAMPS’ staff attorneys are also available.
