Student Eligibility & Clinic Requirements
-
Only students in good academic standing are eligible to participate in a clinic course per South Carolina Student Practice Rule 401.
-
All clinics are 6 credit hours, contain seminar and casework components, and must be taken for a grade. Clinics are capped at 8 students.
-
Once enrolled, students cannot drop clinic without written permission from their clinic professor.
-
Students cannot enroll in a clinic and externship, ICN, or capstones in the same semester.
-
Students must meet all prerequisites for the clinic they are interested in by the first date of class for clinic they are enrolling in.
-
Clinics are limited to 3Ls and spring semester 2Ls by the SC Student Practice Rule which mandates that a student must have completed at least 50% of the total credits needed for graduation and completed professional responsibility.
Clinic First-in-Time Registration
Registration for Fall 2026 & Spring 2027 Clinics: Clinic registration is separate from and precedes the Law School’s general registration process. Students will be emailed a form to indicate their interest in and eligibility for selected clinics. Students will be enrolled in clinics on a first-in-time basis. Timestamps generated through the registration process and clinic preference will determine whether eligible students are enrolled into clinic.
Registration link will be live: Tuesday, March 17th at 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.
(Registrar’s Office will email Clinic Registration link)
Announcements: March 19th (Registrar’s Office enrolls selected students into clinic)
Enrollment Procedure:
-
Clinics will be enrolled with eligible students on a first-in-time basis with a preference given to 3L students with no prior clinic enrollment.
-
Students will be sorted by class year, clinic preference, and timestamp to fill each clinic.
-
Students will only be enrolled in clinic if they have completed or will complete all required pre-requisites and co-requisites by the start of their chosen clinic.
To Prepare for Clinic Registration
Review the Clinic website and Law School Registration packet, attend the Registrar’s mandatory information session, and email clinic professors with any specific questions about individual clinics.
Think carefully about clinic requirements and your clinic preferences:
-
Clinic seminars meet twice per week in two-hour blocks. In addition, students are required to complete an average of 11 hours of clinic casework per week during the semester.
-
By listing a clinic in the registration process, you are confirming your interest and availability for that clinic. Once enrolled, you are not permitted to drop without written permission from your clinic professor.
-
Please be intentional about your clinic preferences. Only list those clinics you would be interested in taking, knowing you will have limited ability to drop.
-
Students are permitted to engage in outside work during their clinic semester with 2 important caveats: 1) clinic work takes priority over external jobs, 2) external employment cannot pose any ethical conflicts per South Carolina Rules of Professional Conduct.
Mandatory Clinic Orientation
The Clinic has a mandatory Orientation for enrolled students which occurs one or two days before the start of each semester. The exact date will be provided to enrolled clinic students once Orientation is scheduled.
