BSN Program Information

Academic Standards for the Traditional BSN

  1. Students must earn a "C" or better in ALL courses that are to be used towards BSN degree requirements.
  2. No more than one below "C" grade in a BSN required science course.
    • Students must earn a minimum grade of  "C " in all required courses in the nursing program. Only one below  "C"  grade is allowed in a required science or nursing (NURS) course to remain eligible for the nursing major. Any science course that needs to be repeated must be taken within the USC System. All nursing courses that need to be repeated must be taken at USC Columbia.
    • The BSN program recognizes the University grade forgiveness policy. Details on the University of South Carolina's grade forgiveness policy can be found here.
  3. Students must maintain an INSTITUTIONAL grade point average (GPA) of 3.000 (on a 4.000 scale).

Academic Standing

  1. College of Nursing lower division (pre-nursing) students must maintain an institutional GPA of 3.0.  Lower division (pre-nursing) students with an institutional GPA below 3.0, will be placed on probation for the following semester.  If a lower division student maintains a below 3.0 institutional GPA for two consecutive major semesters, the student would then be dismissed from the College of Nursing.
  2. College of Nursing BSN students may attempt each nursing (NURS) course twice in the undergraduate program. A grade of W (Withdrawal) in any NURS undergraduate course constitutes an attempt. If a student earns one W or one below C grade in a required nursing (NURS) course, this is considered one failed attempt. One failed attempt will result in probation with the College of Nursing. A second failed attempt at the same NURS course will result in dismissal from the College of Nursing.
  3. Failure to meet the minimum GPA standards of the College of Nursing may influence a student's academic standing at the University, (See the Academic Bulletin for more information).

Graduation
