Simulation Suites

The Center for Simulation and Experiential Learning (SAEL) has simulation suites dedicated to instructing students through simulated scenarios.

Acute Care Suite

This suite has eight hospital rooms with a central nurses station. These rooms are equipped with real patient call lights that alert the nurses' station, simulating a hospital floor. They also have a patient central monitoring system, and headwalls with simulated oxygen and suction to recreate a patient room environment. Each room is also equipped with three cameras and a microphone that can be viewed from any computer during simulation scenarios. We have high fidelity manikins that simulate a real-life patient with lung, heart and other sounds. We even have a birthing mother, newborn and pediatric manikins. The control rooms inside the suite allow for educators to speak through the manikin during simulation. There are debriefing rooms at each side for meeting with students before and after simulation. Real code carts, pyxis machines, linen carts, and other equipment make the experience authentic. We have the flexibility with the hospital unit to make it an ICU unit, labor and delivery, orthopedic, or medical surgical unit on any given day, based on student learning needs.

Primary Care Suite

This area has four primary care rooms simulating a real-life health provider’s office. They have an exam table used during simulated patient assessments. A microphone plus multiple cameras are in the room and can be viewed on any computer and in the control room. The debriefing rooms allow the educators to meet with our students before and after the simulation. Because we use simulated participants, who are actors that portray patients, there is also a sitting and changing rooms for them next to the entrance. The simulated participants give a realistic experience for our students to practice their communication skills.

Community Apartment

The community apartment simulates a patient's home environment, which includes a bed, kitchenette and bathroom. This area is used for home health scenarios where students learn about visiting patients in their own home. The bathroom is ADA compliant which allows our students to practice transferring a patient to the tub or toilet easily with a wheelchair. This area has microphones with cameras so that the simulation can be viewed on any computer or in the control room.

Skills Suite

The skills suite is made up of three large  skills labs (36 beds total) used for health assessment and nursing fundamentals courses. Curtains separate each patient area and headwalls are in place with simulated oxygen and suction. Manikins are available to practice skills or students have the options to practice assessments on each other.
