Full Funding
The College of Nursing is committed to making your doctoral nursing education more affordable. In addition to full tuition funding of the first 36 credit hours of pre-dissertation coursework, you have access to other sources of financial support, including university and private scholarships, government agency traineeships, federal loans and professional association scholarships.

Assistantships
Ph.D. students have the opportunity to work for the College of Nursing as graduate research assistants, graduate assistants and instructional assistants. Hours and compensation vary by position type.
- Graduate research assistants support a faculty member with funded research. Opportunities may also include collaboration on interdisciplinary research teams under the mentorship of internationally recognized faculty scholars.
- Graduate assistants support faculty or administrative offices, and the nature of the work varies by position and the needs of the college.
- Instructional assistants support the faculty instructor(s), including duties related to teaching in a graduate-level course.
Positions are available to full-time and part-time students.
College of Nursing Endowed Scholarships
Full-time nursing graduate students (enrolled in nine credits per term) are eligible to apply and be considered for multiple scholarships coordinated through a single application process. The College of Nursing offers general scholarships.
University of South Carolina Financial Opportunities
The Graduate School at South Carolina offers a variety of funding sources that can lower the cost of your doctoral education. The Presidential Fellowship Program is the most prestigious university-wide award for promise of excellence at the graduate level. In addition, the Graduate School coordinates competitive travel grants and other funding awards to students disseminating research at professional meetings.
Federal and State Fellowships, Traineeships, Grants and Loans
Federal and state agencies such as the National Institute of Nursing Research, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provide grants, scholarships and traineeships for qualified students. Several loan programs, including the Federal Nurse Faculty Loan Program, BOLD Career Pathway Program, and National Health Service Corps offer loan repayment or forgiveness for graduates pursuing academic careers.
