Connecting academics and beyond-the-classroom experiences

CIEL is a comprehensive learning initiative to support students in enhancing their Carolina education by connecting academics and beyond-the-classroom experiences. Students can explore recommendations by major or check out how to get involved in community service, internships, peer leadership, study abroad or research. E-portfolios help students record and reflect on their experiences.

Students are recognized for outstanding involvement in CIEL with the distinct honor to graduate with Leadership Distinction. To earn the distinction, students must demonstrate significant engagement outside the classroom, connect their experiences with what they have learned in classes, and apply what they have learned to lead. Students are honored in the graduation program with cords of garnet, black and white, and will also receive a special designation on their transcripts.

CIEL provides faculty and staff with support materials and grant opportunities to develop experiences for students their areas. Hear a faculty member describe an example of connecting experiences and coursework (integrative learning).
