SmartState Endowed Chairs at the University of South Carolina
SmartState Endowed Chairs are the world-class research scientists and engineers who head up SmartState Centers in a variety of research areas.
Since its inception in 2005, the SmartState Program has brought the knowledge and expertise of 43 world-class scientists to South Carolina. Appropriated South Carolina Education Lottery funds and legislatively mandated matching non-state funds provide support for hiring world-class researchers who serve as endowed chairs of the centers. The Office of the Provost nominates faculty to become SmartState Endowed Chairs.

USC is home to 26 SmartState Centers of Economic Excellence, including 18 that are headquartered at the Columbia campus, and eight in which USC is a supporting research collaborator working with other South Carolina research institutions.
Through the SmartState Program, South Carolina's research institutions team up through partnerships and collaborations to make an impact on our state's economic well-being while working to advance research and economic development in a variety of fields.
